The Sticky Truth About Aphids

If you’ve noticed a shiny, sticky substance coating your trees, patio, or outdoor furniture, aphids may be the culprit. But should you be concerned? That’s where we can help.

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that feed on plant sap. While that may sound alarming, they are not typically considered a serious pest. Aphids commonly feed on a wide variety of plants, including trees, shrubs, vegetables, and flowers.

In most cases, aphids do not cause significant damage to trees and shrubs. However, they can become a nuisance because of the sticky residue they leave behind. As aphids feed, they produce a sugary waste known as “honeydew.” This substance can coat patios, vehicles, and outdoor furniture, while also attracting bees and wasps. Although the plants themselves are usually not harmed by the infestation, the mess caused by honeydew often makes aphids unwelcome.

Aphids can however be more problematic in vegetable gardens, especially when infestations are heavy. They feed on tender leaves and young growth, which can lead to curled or twisted leaves, stunted shoots, and poor plant growth. If you notice these symptoms in your garden, aphids may be the cause.

So, what should you do about aphids?

If aphids are present in your trees or shrubs but the honeydew is not creating a problem, it is often best to simply leave them alone unless the plant begins to show signs of stress. If honeydew is covering your patio, vehicles, or outdoor spaces, we offer several treatment options, including soil injections and spraying.

For aphids in vegetable gardens, local nurseries carry a variety of insecticidal soap products that can help manage infestations. If you prefer a more natural approach, releasing ladybugs can also help reduce aphid populations.
